Binance’s security incident: frozen funds are not the same as recovered funds.

Binance is investigating a security incident disclosed on 29 October. AP’s updated report says the exchange estimates about $6.3 billion was affected and about $3 billion frozen on-chain. These are preliminary company figures, not a final loss assessment. Binance says deposits and withdrawals are suspended and user funds remain safe.
Earlier Reuters reporting recorded $2.54 billion frozen, including action by Tether and Circle. The changing totals reflect successive reports; they should not be added together. Binance co-founder Yi He said the company would cover hacking losses. That is a commitment, not evidence that every affected asset has been recovered or every service restored.
A freeze restricts movement; it does not by itself return money to an exchange or settle customers’ claims. Readers should distinguish the incident estimate, assets immobilised, and any eventual recovery. We are not assigning responsibility to an attacker on the basis of circulating claims. Reuters reported that the separate Binance.US exchange said it was unaffected.
An exchange’s most useful status update contains what stopped, what still works and what happens next. The reassuring adjective can wait outside with my ceremonial security helmet.
